NEC's New Technology Enables 100Mbps Phone-line Data Transmission

According to a Nikkei report, NEC and subsidiary NEC Magnus Communications have developed a new technology that allows high-speed Internet access at up to 100Mbps over standard copper telephone lines within a distance of 100 meters. This technology is envisaged to offer fiber-optic Internet access without the need for fiber-optic cables, specifically designed for deployment inside apartments and hotels. The first device based on this technology, complete with a communications terminal, is priced at 289,000 Yen (US$ 2,333.1; US$1 = 123.9 Yen) and slated for rollout in June 2007.
